Indonesia has just implemented a new visa for tourists and business travellers. The new visa will be valid for 5 years, during which one may travel multiple times to Indonesia. The visa is available in 1-year and 2-year variants.

Who is eligible for the 5-year visa?

The new 5-year-valid visa for tourism and business trips is ideal for travellers who want to travel to Indonesia multiple times for up to 60 consecutive days at a time. Upon being granted, the visa is linked to the applicant’s passport, which must be valid for at least 6 years from the moment of the application. This visa allows travellers to go to Indonesia for a holiday, or to visit their family and friends, attend fairs and exhibitions or carry out various business activities.

The visa is not appropriate for:

  • travellers who receive compensation (in any form) from an Indonesian employer or national;
  • travellers who work for an Indonesian organisation;
  • travellers who sell products or services in Indonesia;
  • travellers going to Indonesia to monitor production processes;
  • travellers without sufficient financial resources to pay for their trip (minimum USD 2,000).

Validity and duration of stay explained

The new visa is available in variants with different validity periods. For example, one variant is valid for 5 years, but there are other variants valid for one or two years. It is a multiple-entry visa, which means it allows unlimited trips to Indonesia during its validity period. Each trip may last up to 60 consecutive days. There is also no official limits to the total number of days a traveller can spend in Indonesia per year.

What is the cost of the 5-year visa for Indonesia?

The visa costs 15,000,000 IDR, about 755 GBP (on 04/01/2024), while visas with shorter validity periods are cheaper. Indeed, the 2-year visa costs 6,000,000 IDR (about 300 GBP), while the 1-year visa is 3,000,000 IDR (about 150 GBP). If you only need a visa for one trip to Indonesia of up to 30 or 60 consecutive days, you may also apply for the e-visa via this website. This visa costs € 64,95.

How do I apply for the visa?

Indonesia wants to make visa applications easier by digitising the application procedure. The new 5-year visa may also be applied for online, through the website of the Indonesian Immigration service. To apply for the visa, you have to fill in an application form and provide several documents, such as a passport photo and a proof that you have sufficient financial resources (at least 2,000 USD). All fees must be paid by credit card.

Is the 5-year visa valid for Bali?

Each visa for Indonesia is valid for a trip to all parts of the island country. The 5-year-visa allows travellers to visit Bali as many times as they want during the 5-year validity period. Each trip may last up to 60 days. The 5-year tourist or business visa is therefore also suitable for those who regularly travel to Bali for their holiday or to do business. Of course, the visa may also be used to travel to other Indonesian islands, such as Java or Lombok.

Visa for short stays in Indonesia

If the multi-year visas do not suit your needs, you can easily apply for an e-visa for Indonesia. The visa may be used for one trip and allows a stay of up to 30 days in Indonesia, which can be extended once by another 30 days. After submitting the application, it takes on average 2 weeks for it to be processed. For urgent applications, the processing time is 6 working days on average.
