Vietnam is represented in the United Kingdom and Ireland by the Vietnamese embassy in London. However, most travellers who travel to Vietnam for a holiday, business trip or transfer do not need to visit the embassy. They can easily apply for their Vietnam visa online.

Responsibilities of the embassy

The Vietnam embassy in London has several tasks. On the one hand, Vietnamese people in the United Kingdom and Ireland can contact the embassy for consular affairs, such as applying for passports, extracts from the Vietnamese registers and other documents. On the other hand, the embassy is responsible for visa applications of foreigners who are not eligible for the e-visa for Vietnam.

Furthermore, the embassy maintains bilateral relations between Vietnam and the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom supports Vietnam with development aid with the aim of improving education and health care in the country and making adjustments to combat climate change, among other benefits. The UK is, in fact, the largest foreign investor in Vietnam’s education sector. In recent years, economic relations between the United Kingdom and Vietnam have grown significantly. Vietnam is the second-largest Southeast Asian exporter to the UK, second only to Thailand.

When is a visit to the embassy necessary?

Visiting the embassy is not necessary for most travellers. British and Irish travellers can generally travel to Vietnam with an e-visa, which is applied for online. Travellers only need to visit the embassy if they do not meet the requirements of the electronic visa or want to stay in Vietnam longer than allowed with an e-visa.

An e-visa allows travellers to stay in Vietnam for a maximum of 90 consecutive days. In addition, there are only a limited number of airports, ports and border crossings where e-visa holders may arrive and depart. Travellers who do not meet these requirements or who wish to stay longer than 90 days need a physical Vietnam visa (a visa that is applied directly to the passport). This physical Vietnam visa can be acquired at the Vietnamese embassy.
