Do I need a visa for New Zealand?
Do you need a visa for your trip to New Zealand? All travellers that want to travel to New Zealand by plane or by cruise ship require a visa to do so. Only travellers with a New Zealand or Australian passport are exempt from this. Applying for the NZeTA online is the cheapest, fastest and easiest way to meet this requirement. Check before applying if all the requirements are met, such as the maximum length of stay of 3 months.
What is an NZeTA? An NZeTA is an electronic travel permit (visa waiver) for New Zealand. The abbreviation stands for “New Zealand electronic Travel Authority”. If you apply for an NZeTA online, you will not need to visit the embassy to have a visa applied to your passport. After approval, an NZeTA is digitally linked to the passport, and can thus be compared to the ETA for Australia and the eTA for Canada. When this website mentions the New Zealand visa it refers to the NZeTA, unless otherwise specified.
New Zealand visa requirements and validity term
To make use of the simple online application procedure of the NZeTA visa for New Zealand, the requirements listed below need to be met. It is also important to take into account the validity term and the overall length of stay per trip.
What is the online visa suited for?
- Tourism (including holidays and visiting friends or family)
- Business trips (including conferences, trainings and other gatherings)
- Applying for paid or unpaid jobs in New Zealand
- Participating in unpaid amateur sports
- Transiting in New Zealand
How long is the NZeTA visa for New Zealand valid for?
The validity term is two years, starting from the day of approval. A single visa can be used to travel to New Zealand an unlimited number of times. Each stay can only last a maximum of 3 consecutive months. During each period of 12 months, you can stay in New Zealand for a total of 6 months.
Other requirements to travel with an NZeTA include the traveller:
- possesses a passport that is valid for at least 3 more months after the planned date of departure from New Zealand
- needs to possess a return or transit ticket on arrival
- must be able to prove on arrival that they possess sufficient financial means to complete the trip

New Zealand visa application
How can I submit a New Zealand visa application? Applying for a visa for a holiday or business trip to New Zealand (the NZeTA) can be done entirely online, through the online application form on this website. After filling in the application form and making the payment, a passport photo must be uploaded. The application is then processed by the New Zealand immigration service. As soon as the application is approved, this will be confirmed by text message and the visa will be sent to you by e-mail. It can be used right away.
How long before departure do I need to apply? The standard delivery time is 1 week. If that is too long, the option "urgent delivery" can be selected in the application form. The application is then processed right away, which generally leads to an approved visa within 60 minutes in 90% of the cases. However, no guarantees can be provided whatsoever regarding delivery times, including with urgent cases. There is also a chance that the application is denied, though that chance is very small. If the application is denied, another visa type needs to be applied for, which can sometimes take several weeks. The New Zealand immigration service therefore recommends applying for the NZeTA as early as possible. It is not necessary to have already booked a flight or accommodation to apply for a visa.
What does the New Zealand visa cost? The government of New Zealand levies a tourist tax, the so-called “International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy” (IVL). This tourist tax is 35 New Zealand dollars and is included in the visa price. The total cost of an NZeTA, including the tourist tax, visa costs and processing costs are € 59,95 per person. If an urgent delivery is chosen, a surcharge of € 17,50 per person applies.

Applied for my New Zealand visa on Saturday and received a notification on Wednesday. I am not travelling until November, so I thought I would apply in good time. Was pleased how quickly my application was processed and happy that I was informed throughout the process.
The online application was straightforward and although the first photograph I submitted was not correct, it was simply and easily rectified on receipt of an email the next day, once I had persuaded the photographer (husband) as to following the clear instructions. Very happy.
Efficient yet simple to complete.
I was very pleased how easy it was to complete the application form. If you have the relevant documents ready that are required it is very straightforward. Plus the fee is still reasonable.

In addition, we manually check your application and all the documents you provide before submitting it to the immigration authorities on your behalf. If we suspect any errors or omissions while doing so, we will personally contact you to ensure that your application can still be processed quickly and correctly. To use our services, you pay us 58 NZD in consular fees, which we pay to the immigration service on your behalf, as well as € 26,65 in service fees as compensation for our services, including VAT. Should an application be rejected despite our support and verification, we will refund the full purchase price (unless an application for a previous New Zealand visa was rejected for the same traveller).
