If you do not apply for a visa for Turkey, you are stopped at the passport check in Turkey. An e-visa Turkey is not the same as a physical visa which is stamped on to the passport; it’s an official travel authorisation to travel to the country. Turkey visa application

Applying for a Turkey visa comes with a number of requirements. You can only apply for an e-visa Turkey if you have a tourist or business travel purpose, and possess a valid passport. You cannot enter into service with a Turkish employer, or study there. A different type of visa is required for that.

The Turkey visa is valid for a maximum of 180 days, but you are only allowed to stay in Turkey for a maximum of 90 days. It doesn’t matter if these are 90 consecutive days, or split up, for example in three trips of 30 days each.
