Travellers from the UK can apply for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) to travel to Indonesia. Travellers from all 26 European Union countries and Switzerland are also eligible for this type of visa. You can now also apply for an electronic VOA online. This saves time and effort upon arrival in Indonesia.

The different visas for Indonesia

For several years, travellers from the UK and many other European countries have been required to hold a visa to travel to Bali or any other of Indonesia's islands. You can apply for this visa at the Indonesian embassy, but you can also apply for a so-called Visa on Arrival (VOA) or electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA). You can only apply for the Visa on Arrival upon arrival in Indonesia. However, you can also submit your visa application via the embassy or apply for an e-VOA before departure. Because the visa application through the embassy takes a lot of time and effort, most travellers opt for one of the two types of the VOA.

The classic VOA for Indonesia

For many years, Indonesia has offered the Visa on Arrival (VOA), a type of visa that you can apply for on arrival at certain airports, seaports or land border crossings. You can apply for the VOA at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport, among other locations. The advantage of this type of visa is that you do not need to file an application before departure. This ensures that you can travel at relatively short notice after you have decided to visit Indonesia.

Nevertheless, this visa type also has its drawbacks. For example, you can only obtain the classic Visa on Arrival at a limited number of locations. You find these locations in the tables below. On the other hand, applying for the visa can be time-consuming, since you may have to wait a long time at your specific point of entry (airport, seaport or border crossing). Also, the fees must be paid in cash or by credit card, and there is a risk that the application may be rejected. In the latter case, you will not be allowed to enter Indonesia, even if you are in the country already. Partly for these reasons, Indonesia has introduced a new electronic VOA.

The e-VOA for Indonesia

In 2022 Indonesia introduced a new type of visa: the e-VOA, or electronic Visa on Arrival. Despite its name, this e-visa cannot be obtained upon arrival in Indonesia. You must submit the application online before departure. By applying for the visa before departure, there is no risk that the application will be rejected on arrival. In addition, the e-VOA allows you to use a larger number of arrival locations than the classic VOA.

The application procedure is very simple. You fill in an online form and provide a number of documents digitally. Yoy can pay for the cost online, with credit card or Paypal. Submitting an application takes only 10-15 minutes and the visa is normally approved within an average of 7 days. If you choose an urgent procedure, the delivery time of the e-VOA Indonesia is only 24 hours on average.

What type of Indonesia visa should I apply for?

Both the VOA and the e-VOA are suitable for tourist trips to Bali or another Indonesian island with a maximum duration of 30 days. The requirements for both visas are also comparable. In both cases, you must be able to show a ticket for your return journey on arrival, and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the moment you leave the country. The main difference between the two visas is the application procedure. A VOA is requested after arrival at the airport in Indonesia, while an e-VOA is requested online before departure.

Are you travelling to Indonesia in less than 24 hours or later? Then you are advised to apply for an e-VOA . This way you can apply for your Indonesia visa from home, and you will not have to wait in the queue in front of the visa desk upon arrival. In addition, you will kow for sure before arrival in Indonesia that your visa is valid. Are you travelling to Indonesia within 24 hours? In this case, your application for an e-VOA will probably not be approved on time. You can still make use of the classic Visa on Arrival for Indonesia, but you should take into account the longer waiting times.
