Start by deciding which visa type and form is right for you

Before you start filling in the visa application form for India, it is important to check what kind of visa you need. Are you travelling for a holiday, a visit to friends and family, or a business trip? Then you can use the electronic visas (e-visas). These can easily be applied for online, with the application form on this website. This form is suitable for British and Irish citizens. Do you have another nationality? If so, please check here whether you can use the e-visa India with your nationality. Finally, you should take into account the maximum validity period of the e-visa India and meet a number of visa requirements.

Do you want to apply for an e-visa for your trip to India? Then use the form on this page. Do you have a different travel purpose, or do you not meet the requirements of the tourist or business e-visa? Then you can use other types of visas, which in many cases require you to go to a consulate, embassy or other counter. You will then receive a physical visa, which will be affixed to your passport. You can still change your travel plans after filling in the form

It is good to know that even after filling in the Indian visa application form, you can still make changes to your travel plans. The form asks for the expected date of arrival and departure and also the airport or seaport through which you are entering and leaving India. However, even after your visa has been granted, you may still deviate from this.

Did you apply for a visa for a stay of 30 days? Visas with a validity of 30 days will never be granted more than three weeks before the entered arrival date. Did you apply for a visa with a validity of one year? In that case, your visa application will be never be processed more than 120 days before your arrival date. If you submit your visa application within, respectively, 21 days or 120 days before your trip, it will be processed immediately, and you can assume average delivery times.

You may travel to India as soon as your visa has been granted, regardless of your initial expected arrival date. You may also arrive in India later than the date you entered in the application form. How much later you can arrive in India depends on the validity period of your visa. Read more about this on the page explaining the validity period of the visa. You may arrive in India at any airport and seaport which you can select in the application form. Therefore you do not necessarily have to enter the country at the location you selected in the application form.

You can also fill in the form on behalf of another person or for a group of travellers

With the online form, you can apply for a visa for yourself or for someone else. If desired, you can also add several people to one form. This way, you can easily submit a group application for several visas at the same time. This saves time, as you do not have to fill in the same travel details every time. However, you do need permission from each traveller for whom you are applying for an Indian visa.

Gather the necessary data

It is recommended gathering some information in advance, which you will need when you start filling in the online form. First, itʼs important to know your overall travel plans and the details of your first nightʼs accommodation in India. You will also be asked for your own passport details and contact details, as well as the contact details of an emergency contact. Emergency contact means someone you know well and who will not be travelling with you. In case of an emergency, the immigration service can contact this person. Furthermore, the full name and place of birth of the parents of each traveller, as well as that of the partner of married travellers, are requested. Finally, the address details of the employer must be filled in, and the form also asks for the travel history of each traveller.

Gather the required documents

Do you want to apply for a visa to go on holiday or to visit friends or family? Then you only need to provide a photograph and a passport scan. Do you want to apply for a visa for a business trip? In this case, in addition to a photograph and a passport scan, you must also provide a business card and an invitation letter from the company that you will be visiting in India. You can easily submit all documents digitally via this website. This does not have to be done immediately after filling in the form, but can also be done a few days or weeks later. However, the delivery times mentioned for the visa only start when all documents have been submitted in good order.

Filling in the application form - step by step

Step 1 - The contact details

The first part of the e-visa India application form concerns the contact details and travel information. You need to fill in these details only once. This is also the case if you want to apply for a visa for several travellers at the same time using one form. These travellers do not have to live at the same address. However, all travellers must live in the same country. If this is not the case, submit separate applications for each person.

Step 2 - The travel details

In this part of the form, answer the questions about your travel plans as well as you can. As mentioned at the top of this article, you have a lot of freedom to change your travel plans after applying for the visa. Also read the explanation with each question in the form. On a computer or laptop, these notes appear on the right side of the screen when you select an entry field. On a phone or tablet, you can read the same explanation by clicking on the question mark icon next to each field in the form.

Step 3 - The passport data

This is the most important part of the Indian visa application form. It is important to be very careful when copying the passport details in the form. A small typo can cause major problems during your trip. After you have submitted your visa application, it will be manually checked again by a visa specialist. However, you remain responsible for the data entered. If the details on your visa are not exactly the same as those on your passport, you may not be allowed to board the aircraft.

Step 4 - Details of partner, parents, and employer

The form not only asks for the details of each traveller for whom a visa India is applied for, but also some details of their partner, parents, and employer. The partnerʼs details only need to be filled in if the traveller is married to his or her partner. The parentsʼ details always have to be filled in, even if the parent(s) is/are no longer alive. The employer information also has to be filled in for each traveller, even for (underage) children. Has the traveller never been employed? Then the (former) employer of the travellerʼs father must be filled in. This may seem illogical at times, but it is a requirement of the Indian immigration authorities to process any visa application.

Step 5 - Questions about the travel history

The second-to-last part of the application form consists of questions about the travel history of the applicant. First, it asks which countries have been visited in the last 10 years. Then it asks whether in the last three years a country near India has been visited, and if so, which one and how many times. Finally, it asks whether the traveller has visited India before, and if so, when, where and with which visa. Are you unable to answer these questions? Then you may also fill in ʼUNKNOWNʼ.

Step 6 - Some security questions

The last part of the form consists of some questions that can be answered with ʼyesʼ or ʼnoʼ. These questions are meant to find out if the traveller has a criminal past and/or has ever broken immigration rules.

After filling in the form

Have you filled in the entire application form? Then you can submit your application using the button ʼApply for visaʼ at the bottom of the form. On the next page, you will once again see all the details you filled in. It is advised checking again whether you have made any mistakes. On this page, you can also select your preferred method of payment and pay for the e-visa for India. After making this payment, you will be forwarded to the upload page. Here, you can submit a photograph and passport scan for each traveller in the application. If the purpose of the journey is business, you must also submit a business card for each traveller and an invitation letter from the organisation that you will be visiting during your trip to India.

When the form has been completed and the payment and all required documents have been received in good order, your application will be processed. Have you filled in a departure date more than three weeks in the future? Then the processing of the visa application will be delayed until exactly three weeks before departure.
