Your travel purpose

Holiday or business trip to Australia

A visa is required for a holiday or business trip to Australia. The eVisitor visa suffices for the most travellers. This is the cheapest visa for Australia, with the simplest application process. The visa also allows you to visit friends and family in Australia. Do you want to work in Australia or do voluntary work? You can find more information on the page about working in Australia.

Studying in Australia

Do you want to study or attend a training course in Australia? You are allowed to do that on an eVisitor visa, but only if the training or study does not last longer than three months. This is independent of the validity period of the visa. The permitted duration of each stay on the visa is also three consecutive months. You are not allowed to follow a study programme of more than three months by dividing it into different trips.

Studying in AustraliaA study or training course in Australia is permitted if it lasts less than three months and is not medical

Do you want to study for a total of more than three months? Then you can apply for a special student visa. You will also have to apply for a student visa if you intend to follow a medical study or training in Australia. This includes (parts of) courses to become a doctor, dentist, nurse or paramedic. You also need a special student visa if you want to attend courses relating to child care.

Passport requirements

You need a valid passport to be able to apply for a visa for Australia. This also applies to minors. You have to fill in your passport number and the passport numbers of any other people you want to include in your visa application. The passport number will appear on the visa. Upon arrival, the immigration service of Australia checks whether the passport number on your visa corresponds with the passport number in your passport. You must travel on the same passport that you used for the visa application. Please note that the passport has to be valid for six months beyond your arrival date in Australia. Has your passport expired, or will it expire soon? Then you should apply for a new passport first. Afterwards, you may use the new passport to apply for a (new) visa. If you receive your new passport only shortly before your departure to Australia, you can submit an urgent visa application.

Nationalities eVisitor

Your nationality according to your passport
You can apply for an eVisitor visa Australia if your passport states that you are a citizen of the United Kingdom, Ireland, a country of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Vatican City or Switzerland. Do you have another nationality? Then you can check whether you are eligible for an ETA Australia.

Do you have Australian nationality? Then you cannot apply for any type of visa for Australia. Not even if you have a second nationality, and you are travelling with the passport from the other country. If you have Australian nationality and want to travel to Australia, you have to use your Australian passport. Contact the Australian embassy if you do not have an Australian passport (any more).

Your Health

Does your physical or mental health pose a risk to public health in Australia? In that case, you are not allowed to travel to Australia, regardless of whether you hold a valid visa. You may only travel to Australia on a visa if you meet these medical requirements:

  • You do not have tuberculosis
  • You will not give birth in Australia
  • Your arrival is not expected to result in healthcare-related costs higher than AUD 86,000 (± GBP 44,400 or EUR 53,000)
  • Your arrival is not expected to result in longer waiting times for capacity constrained care

Are you unsure about whether you meet the requirements above? Contact the Australian immigration service. You can also contact the immigration service if you have a compelling reason to travel to Australia, but do not meet the requirements. The immigration service will assign you a doctor with whom you can discuss your situation. The doctor will assess whether your health permits you to travel to Australia on an eVisitor visa or another visa type.

Healthcare costs during your stay in Australia

The rates for medical treatment in Australia can be considerably higher than in the UK. You are responsible for the cost of medical care in Australia yourself. Check before you leave whether you are sufficiently insured through your health or travel insurance. Also check the coverage for specialist treatments, private health care institutions, ambulance use and dentistry.

Are you a resident of the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Slovenia or Sweden? Then you can apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) free of charge before departure. On presentation of your passport and EHIC/GHIC, you can enrol in the national health insurance fund, called Medicare. If you are enrolled in Medicare, you do not have to pay for most basic treatments yourself. The healthcare institution can claim these directly from your health insurance company.

Your character and behaviour

The Australia visa is used by Australian authorities to prevent undesirable individuals from entering the country. Anyone who is likely to pose a danger to the Australian community, or to engage in criminal behaviour such as defamation, harassment, stalking or assault, is not welcome in Australia. Additionally, you are not eligible for an Australian visa if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • You or a member of your family are in debt to the Australian government.
  • You do not have sufficient funds to pay for your stay and return trip.
  • You were at some point found guilty of domestic violence or child abuse.
  • You have been given a prison sentence totalling more than 12 months (regardless of whether you served it or not).
  • You are a fugitive and/or wanted by Interpol.
  • You are or have been involved with a person, an organisation or a group which is likely to be involved in criminal behaviour.
  • There are reasonable grounds to suspect that you have been involved in smuggling, human trafficking, genocide, a war crime, a crime against humanity, a crime involving torture or slavery or a crime of international concern, irrespective of whether you have been convicted of such a crime.

Do you meet all visa requirements?

If you meet all requirements for the eVisitor visa Australia, you can apply for the visa online. Be aware that you must continue to meet these requirements until you leave Australia. Has your situation changed between the time you applied for the visa and the moment you start your trip? Then you should check whether you still meet the requirements.
