Before you start applying for your Australia visa, check whether you meet the requirements listed on this page. The use of the eVisitor visa is subject to requirements concerning your travel purpose, your passport, your health and your character.
Your travel purpose
Holiday or business trip to Australia
A visa is required for a holiday or business trip to Australia. The eVisitor visa is the cheaper and easiest to apply for variant. This also allows for visits to friends and family in Australia. Do you want to work in Australia or perform voluntary work? Read more about working in Australia.

Studying in Australia
Do you want to attend a training course or study in Australia? This is also possible with an eVisitor visa, but only if the training or study does not last longer than three months. This is independent of the validity period of the visa. The maximum duration of stay of the visa is also three months. It is not allowed to divide a study of more than three months into several trips in which you stay in Australia for less than three months each time.
A study or training course in Australia is permitted if it lasts less than three months and is not medical
Do you want to study for a total of more than three months? Then you can apply for a special study visa. A study visa is also always needed if you want to attend a medical study or training course. For example, for (part of) a course to become a doctor, dentist, nurse, paramedic or childcare employee.
You and all your fellow travellers must hold a valid passport. This also applies to minors. Your passport must still be valid for six months when you arrive in Australia. When you apply for your Australia visa, you must fill in your passport number. This passport number also appears on the visa. On arrival in Australia the passport number in the visa must correspond with the number in your passport. You must therefore travel with the same passport as was used to apply for your visa. Is your passport no longer valid? Then you must first apply for a new passport. You can then apply for a (new) visa using your new passport. Will you receive your new passport just before you leave for Australia? In that case you should submit an urgent visa application.
Your nationality according to your passport
You can apply for an eVisitor visa Australia if your passport states that you are a citizen of the United Kingdom, Ireland, a country of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Vatican City, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. Do you have another nationality? Check beforehand whether you can apply for an ETA Australia.
Do you have Australian nationality? Then you cannot apply for any type of visa for Australia. Not even if your Australian nationality is your second nationality, and you are travelling with a passport from another country. In that case, travel with your Australian passport or contact the Australian embassy if you do not have a passport or no longer have a passport.
Your visa for Australia is linked to the passport you used to apply for it
Does your physical or mental health pose a risk to public health in Australia? Or do you present a potential danger to Australian society? Then you cannot travel to Australia, even if you applied for a visa. You can only apply for an Australia visa if you meet all these medical requirements:
- You do not have tuberculosis
- You will not give birth in Australia
- Your arrival is not expected to result in healthcare-related costs higher than AUD 49,000 (± £27,000)
- Your arrival is not expected to result in longer waiting times for capacity constrained care
Do you doubt whether you can meet the above requirements? Or are you concerned about being able to travel to Australia? Contact the Australian immigration service. They will assign a doctor with whom you can discuss your situation. The doctor will then assess whether your health permits you to apply for an eVisitor visa or another type of visa.
Healthcare costs during your stay in Australia
The rates of medical treatment in Australia are sometimes considerably higher than in the UK. Do you need care during your stay in Australia? If so, you will be responsible for the costs. Check before you leave whether you are insured for this via your health insurance or travel insurance. Also check the coverage of costs of specialist treatments, private care institutions, ambulance use and dentistry.
Are you a resident of the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Slovenia or Sweden? Then you can apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) free of charge before departure. On presentation of your passport and EHIC, you can go to Australia. In Australia, you can enrol in the national health insurance fund, called Medicare, by showing your passport and EHIC. If you are enrolled in Medicare, you do not have to pay for most basic treatments yourself. The health care institution can then claim these directly from your health insurance company.
Your character and behaviour
The main purpose of the Australia visa application procedure is to stop undesirable people from entering the country. Anyone who is likely to pose a danger to the Australian community, or to engage in criminal behaviour such as defaming, harassing, stalking or assaulting people in Australia, is not welcome. You may also not apply for an Australia visa in the following situations:
- You or a member of your family are in debt to the Australian government
- You do not have sufficient funds to pay for your stay and return trip
- You have at some point been subjected to a measure because of domestic violence or (sexual) child abuse
- You have been given a prison sentence totalling more than 12 months (served or not)
- You are a fugitive and/or wanted by Interpol
- You are or have been involved with a person, organisation or group which is likely to be involved in criminal behaviour
- There are reasonable grounds to suspect that you have been involved in smuggling, trafficking in human beings, genocide, a war crime, a crime against humanity, a crime involving torture or slavery or a crime of international concern, irrespective of whether you have been convicted of such a crime
