The Indonesian government has introduced a new visa for individuals who wish to work remotely for a foreign employer in Indonesia. The so-called 'Remote Worker Visa' permits travellers to live and work in Indonesia for one year. Travellers who do not intend to work in Indonesia do not need the >Remote Worker Visa but can apply for an Indonesian e-visa for tourism.
New visa to attract digital nomads
The new Remote Worker Visa (E33G) has been available since April 1, 2024. The visa is also referred to as the 'Digital Nomad Visa' because it is intended for individuals who want to work from Indonesia for an employer in their home country. With the new visa, Indonesia aims to attract foreign talent. Since the visa allows its holder to stay in Indonesia for a year, the country becomes more accessible to highly qualified workers who wish to work remotely. The introduction of the new visa is also expected to contribute to economic recovery in Indonesia after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Permitted activities with a Remote Worker Visa
With a Remote Worker Visa, travellers are allowed to stay in Indonesia for one year and work for an organisation which is situated outside of Indonesia. The Remote Worker Visa is a multiple-entry visa, meaning travellers can enter the country multiple times. Family members of the applicant are also allowed to stay in Indonesia during the validity period of the visa. Travellers must arrive in Indonesia within 90 days of the visa issuance. Under certain conditions, the stay in Indonesia can be extended for an additional year.
With a Remote Worker Visa, travellers are permitted to work in Indonesia, but only for companies and organizations based outside of Indonesia. It is not allowed to be employed by an Indonesian company. Additionally, travellers with this visa are not permitted to receive wages or other compensation from Indonesian companies or individuals. Lastly, it is not allowed to sell products or services in Indonesia with this visa.
