The Indonesian government has introduced a new visa for individuals who wish to work remotely for a foreign employer in Indonesia. The so-called 'Remote Worker Visa' permits travellers to live and work in Indonesia for one year. Travellers who do not intend to work in Indonesia do not need the >Remote Worker Visa but can apply for an Indonesian e-visa for tourism.

New visa to attract digital nomads

The new Remote Worker Visa (E33G) has been available since April 1, 2024. The visa is also referred to as the 'Digital Nomad Visa' because it is intended for individuals who want to work from Indonesia for an employer in their home country. With the new visa, Indonesia aims to attract foreign talent. Since the visa allows its holder to stay in Indonesia for a year, the country becomes more accessible to highly qualified workers who wish to work remotely. The introduction of the new visa is also expected to contribute to economic recovery in Indonesia after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Permitted activities with a Remote Worker Visa

With a Remote Worker Visa, travellers are allowed to stay in Indonesia for one year and work for an organisation which is situated outside of Indonesia. The Remote Worker Visa is a multiple-entry visa, meaning travellers can enter the country multiple times. Family members of the applicant are also allowed to stay in Indonesia during the validity period of the visa. Travellers must arrive in Indonesia within 90 days of the visa issuance. Under certain conditions, the stay in Indonesia can be extended for an additional year.

With a Remote Worker Visa, travellers are permitted to work in Indonesia, but only for companies and organizations based outside of Indonesia. It is not allowed to be employed by an Indonesian company. Additionally, travellers with this visa are not permitted to receive wages or other compensation from Indonesian companies or individuals. Lastly, it is not allowed to sell products or services in Indonesia with this visa.

Requirements for applying

To apply for a Remote Worker Visa, you need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. It is recommended to submit the application with a passport that is valid for at least 18 months so that the passport remains valid for at least 6 months after the validity of the visa expires. Additionally, you must be able to demonstrate that you have an employment contract with an organization based outside of Indonesia. Furthermore, to submit the application, you must have a bank balance of at least 2000 USD and an annual income of at least 60,000 USD.

Documents to submit

In addition to completing an online application form, you must also submit several documents to apply for a Remote Worker Visa. These documents include:

  • A recent photograph
  • A scan or photo of your passport
  • An employment contract with a company based outside of Indonesia
  • A bank statement from the past 3 months, proving that you own at least 2000 USD
  • Proof of your annual income of at least 60,000 USD

Remote Worker Visa cost

The cost of the Remote Worker Visa is 2,700,000 IDR plus 150 USD, equivalent to approximately 250 GBP or 295 EUR (as of April 30, 2024). The visa fees are significantly higher than the cost of the electronic tourist visa for Indonesia. If you do not plan to work in Indonesia and do not intend to stay in the country for more than 30 days, you can opt for the tourist visa, which can also be applied for online, similar to the Remote Worker Visa.
