In early June, the foreign ministries of Cambodia and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic passport holders. By doing so, they aim to strengthen political relations between the two countries.

Agreement reached on visa waiver for diplomats

Three weeks ago, Cambodian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Chem Widya and his Azerbaijani counterpart Elnu Mammadov met following the latest round of bilateral consultations between the foreign ministries of Cambodia and Azerbaijan. According to the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Cambodia wants to improve diplomatic relations and cooperation with Azerbaijan. The bilateral consultations between the two countries took three rounds and are a result of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Senʼs visit to Azerbaijan on April 23-24, 2014.

Approach to strengthening political relations

By granting a visa waiver for diplomatic passport holders, the two countries hope to improve trade and economic relations. The two sides discussed the relationship between the two countries, and some regional and international issues. In addition, they drew up a plan for future cooperation to strengthen the relationship in areas of common interest.

In April 2023, Cambodia, together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), plans to provide support in the demining of areas liberated by Azerbaijan. Cambodia and Azerbaijan began their political relationship on February 2, 1995. Today, Cambodia has political relations with as many as 176 countries. According to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade, Azerbaijan imported as much as $2.2 million from Cambodia in 2021.
